Maura Lindsey is an artist, photographer, and film colorist based in New Orleans. She received her BFA from Loyola University in Digital Filmmaking and Studio Art in 2022.

 

Fascinated by photography's storytelling abilities, her work aims to capture a vivid narrative within the confines of a single frame. Early on she took to the photographs of Diane Arbus and Vivian Maier, who allowed raw identities to shine in their work. With this inspiration she married her desire to tell stories with a focus in portraiture.

After spending several years documenting individuals on the streets of New Orleans, she began to experiment with formal portraiture. Here she grew a love for what narratives staged portraits could make possible and often creates personas and fantastical subject matter as a homage to her childhood love of film. Fittingly, she is fixated on the idea of building or showcasing a character: Who is this person? What are they trying to tell us? Where do we see humanity reflected in them?

Though each aspect of these works are intentional and meticulously planned, she is more observational than active in curating the frame; a trait she exercises in her documentary work and in life. She believes her photography is not a solo act, but rather a conversation between subject and artist. Her creative process includes taking time to understand who she's capturing and let shots flow organically, working as a guide to capture the most authentic image.​

Her work has been featured in Downtown Panama City's The Lightroom's 20 Under 20 Exhibit (2018), Loyola University's Clusterfunk Exhibit (2018), and the cover for Marigny Hemenway and James Lerlile's Voodoo single (2020), along with promotional materials for many New Orleans entertainers. Her photography has been published in Where Y'at Magazine for their 2024 Decadence issue.  ​Her mixed media work has been showcased in a 2021 exhibition with New Orlean's The Front Gallery.
